There are those who do what they love and those who learn to love what they do. I would definitely place myself in the latter category. Anything that I took into my head, I did with the deepest commitment and passion. As a kid, I wanted to become a cowboy, then a kick-box fighter, and later a PE and dance teacher. I liked doing sports, so I wanted to be a physical education teacher after high school, and in addition I chose physical therapy as my second specialization, believing that this will make me an even better teacher.
The turning point was a manual therapy training, where I have experienced the power that is in our hands. While I was doing further trainings and read through the literature, I realized that we have to see the human body and solution of problems with a fresh eye.
“The ability to follow past methods is not enough to better our word today.” The words of King Wuling reflect my endeavors well: to be up-to-date in science and to dare to question the methods and theories previously thought “certain”.
When I started studying and using fascial and visceral (internal organic) therapies, I started seeing the human body from a whole new aspect. It became important to me to listen and understand the full story of my patients, including their past surgeries, injuries, internal organic problems, and their worries about their health. During these years I have learned that everyone is unique, and that chronic somatic problems are way more complex than we have previously thought.
Thus, I do not stop at the superficial assessment of symptoms: I believe that there is a close connection between body and mind. I apply a therapeutic method that takes into account not only the physical symptoms but the psychological effects as well – including worries and believes related to health and the fear of movement.
Currently what is most intriguing for me professionally is the interconnection between chronic pain, the functioning of internal organs and the emotional centers of the brain. To put it more simply: What happens in the emotional centers of the brain in case of chronic pain? Why someone might feel hopeless after having chronic pain for a year? How can internal organic dysfunctions affect our emotional state? For example, why do chronic digestive issues often cause anxiety?
Understanding the answers to these questions can help me to be able to treat the complaints of my patients in a profound and comprehensive manner.
Whenever I am not pondering on the above mentioned questions of my profession, I dance, play the piano, do wall climbing and ride my bike in my freetime.
