3. What are the benefits of therapeutic massage?
- Relieves muscle tension: Therapeutic massage helps to relax the muscles and alleviate the tension, which can increase the flexibility of the muscles and decrease muscle pain.
- Relieves pain: The treatment helps to reduce chronic and acute pain, such as headache, back pain, joint and muscle pains.
- Reduces stress and anxiety: Therapeutic massage helps reducing stress and anxiety, which often cause muscle tightness and general physical and mental health problems.

Massage can reduce your cortisol levels (which is a stress hormone) and also increase the level of serotonin and dopamine. These neurotransmitters are known to stabilize mood. Studies have shown that therapeutic massage is highly effective for example in the case of insomnia caused by menopause.
- Helps in rehabilitation: Therapeutic massage helps speeding up the rehabilitation process after injuries and surgeries; it improves joint mobility and as a result, muscle strength.
- Improves immune functions: A study suggests that regular massage increases the number of white blood cells, which, as we know, fight against viruses.
- Also suitable for digestive problems after surgery: Abdominal massage can promote the optimal function of bowel motility. This is mainly important for those suffering from constipation after surgery.
4. How can we use therapeutic massage in addition to manual therapy?
Therapeutic massage and manuálterápia are two types of therapeutic approaches, each of them a proven and effective aid in the treatment of muscle and joint pain and musculoskeletal problems. However, by combining these two forms of treatment we can maximize the effectiveness of the therapy, and therefore that of the treatment.
Manualtherapy consists of the manual application of techniques targeting the musculoskeletal system, with the purpose of improving the functioning of the musculoskeletal system. This includes the improvement of joint mobility, the alleviation of muscle tension, the correction of posture and pain reduction. Manual therapy allows the massage or manual therapist to directly treat the body, and it helps restoring the natural movements of our body.
However, therapeutic massage is a therapeutic technique during which the massage therapist uses various massage techniques for the treatment of the patient. This elicits a number of positive physiological effects, as mentioned above, detectable in many different areas, with a great impact on the improvement of the quality of life.
The combination of manual therapy and therapeutic massage makes it possible for the therapist to establish a unique and personalized treatment plan for the patient that will successfully combine the beneficial effects of both methods. For example, manual therapy helps the correction of tissue injuries resulting from past injuries, while therapeutic massage helps reducing tension and stress, thus promoting the healing processes of the body together.
